Santosha (2.42) means “contentment”. Santosha is an aspect of “niyama” (the rules of living), the second of the eight limbs of yoga (2.29) as described in the Yoga Sutras . (Note: the numbers refer to the chapter and verse of the Yoga Sutras .)
“1.2. Yoga is the settling of the mind into silence.
1.3 When the mind is settled, we are established in our essential nature, which is unbounded consciousness.”
In the modern context, this means that we practice asana and pranayama – the physical postures and the breathing exercises – to calm our mind. If we are lucky, then we achieve samadi – the settled mind.
This can be as simple or as complex as a person wishes. The basic postures (asana) and breathing (pranayama) will have almost immediate benefits.
